All questions are multiple-choice. Pick the answer that sounds most natural and grammatically correct.
This sample is a B1-level question. The full test spreads questions across A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 — you'll see questions that feel both easy and challenging. That's intentional — it's how we pinpoint exactly where your grammar knowledge peaks.

The CEFR scale
Which level describes your English?
The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is the international standard for measuring English ability — used by universities, employers, and exam boards worldwide. Take the test to find out where you sit.
You can handle basic everyday situations and communicate simple information. You know core tenses and common vocabulary.
E.g. "Can describe your family, job, and daily routine."
You can deal with most situations while travelling and write simple connected texts on familiar topics.
E.g. "Can describe experiences and briefly explain plans and opinions."
You understand complex texts and can interact fluently with native speakers without strain on either side.
E.g. "Can write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects."
You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much searching for words in professional and academic contexts.
E.g. "Can produce clear, well-structured text on complex topics."
You can understand virtually everything you read or hear and express yourself precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning.
E.g. "Near-native proficiency in all contexts."
Most learners finish in 10–20 minutes. There's no timer, so you can take your time reading each question carefully. Rushing leads to careless errors that skew your result — treat each of the 30 questions as if it matters, because it does.
Completely free, forever. No credit card, no premium tier, no trial period. EngQuiz.Pro is ad-supported — that's how we keep everything free without charging learners. You'll see a small ad on the results page, nothing more.
No. You can complete the full test and see your results without an account or email address. If you want to save your result and get a shareable link, you can optionally provide your email at the end — but even that just sends you a one-time link, not a marketing newsletter.
The test covers all five active CEFR levels: A2 (Elementary), B1 (Intermediate), B2 (Upper-Intermediate), C1 (Advanced), and C2 (Proficient). Each level has 6 dedicated questions, giving 30 questions total. This spread means the test can reliably detect levels from A2 right through to C2.
The result is a strong indicator, not a certified qualification. With 6 questions per level, the test can identify your range reliably — but a single sitting is always subject to focus, guessing, and question familiarity. For a certified CEFR level, you'll need a recognised exam like IELTS, Cambridge, or DELF. Think of this test as a highly accurate placement guide that tells you exactly where to focus your study.
Yes — as many times as you like. Each attempt draws from a pool of questions, so you won't see the exact same 30 questions twice. We recommend waiting a few weeks between retakes so you can study in between and see genuine progress rather than just remembering answers.
You'll see your results immediately — your recommended CEFR level, a breakdown of accuracy at each level, and grammar exercise recommendations. If you enter your email, you'll also receive a shareable link to your result and an optional personalised study-plan email with curated resources for your level.
