About Sentence Structure exercises
Sentence structure is about how clauses, subjects and objects fit together to make a complete, correct sentence. Levels run from B1 to B2, in multiple choice and gap fill, with topics that include run-on sentences, sentence fragments, clauses, objects and word order.
A run-on sentence joins two complete clauses without the right link, as in It was late, we went home. You can fix it with a conjunction (It was late, so we went home), a full stop or a semicolon. A fragment is the opposite problem: Because it rained is only a subordinate clause and needs a main clause. Other exercises look at the subject in complex and inverted sentences, adverbial and noun clauses, and verbs that take an object. Indirect objects have two patterns: She gave him a book and She gave a book to him. A quick test for a fragment is to ask whether the clause could stand as a full answer. If it could not, add a main clause: Because it rained, we stayed in.
