About IELTS Academic vocabulary exercises
IELTS Academic vocabulary spans the formal, multi-domain lexical range assessed across all four IELTS Academic skills. The Academic Word List (AWL), compiled by Averil Coxhead, identifies the 570 most important academic word families that appear across scientific, economic, social, and humanities disciplines.
These exercises target AWL words in realistic academic sentence contexts. Practising IELTS Academic vocabulary here improves Lexical Resource — the IELTS band descriptor worth 25% of your Writing and Speaking scores. Each exercise covers collocations, meaning distinctions, and word-form variations (analyse/analysis/analytical) essential for Reading and Writing Tasks 1 and 2.
Each exercise set presents Academic Word List vocabulary in a complete sentence or short passage, requiring you to select or type the correct word form. Exercises are available at B2 and C1 level, corresponding to IELTS Band 6.0–7.5 targets.
